For better or worse, copyright law is as important to the average person as it ever has been. But it is not any easier to learn or figure out. In one way or another, I have been dealing with copyright issues for morernthan 30 years. Yet I continue to get flummoxed by issues I have reviewed dozens of times. Despite the complicated statutory scheme that contains our nation's copyright law and much of the erroneous information that passes as interpretation of it, there are some concepts that retain their consistency year afterrnyear. I teach these concepts as copyright's lasting rules, and they provide creators and users of copyrighted works a level of certainty in a field that currently tends to be vague and obtuse.
