The federal court has postponed the Oct. 7 fairness hearing on the Google Book Search settlement to allow the parties to hammer out an amended agreement. Meanwhile, Europeans who are faced with the possibility of an agreement that could set thernstandard for the rest of the world are trying to come up with a European solution for digital copyright.rnObjections to the U.S. agreement have been lodged by the French and German governments, European publishers, and authors. Concerns have been expressed about several factors: scanning books published in Europe without the permission of copyright holders, scanning books that are still on sale in Europe, and creating a rights registry operated exclusively by U.S. publishers and authors on privacy issues and censorship. Some of these issues have already been addressed.
