Even in today's highly distributed university IT environments, the desktop PC remains the most important part of the academic IT infrastructure. The desktop is an essential platform for student productivity. Desktop endpoints are not just the companion to books, they are key drivers to successful academic study. They are becoming computing "peripherals" to the library as the academic library continues its evolution from a document archive to a dynamic multimedia environment. Given these factors, efficient management of desktops is essential to successful academic information services departments. The fully featured ("thick client") PC has been the traditional workhorse of the university. However, for most situations, thick client PCs are less than ideal and present challenges to the institution's information services department and the university IT staff.
