I first met Charles Clarke at the 2008 Search Engine Meeting in Boston last May, where he gave the opening presentation XML Retrieval: Problems and Potential. He won the Evvie Award (named in honor of the late Everett Brenner) for best paper at the meeting (see the June issue of IT). This interview delves into search and Web 2.0 subjects that have become possible as a result of the development of XML. Clarke also tells us about the work of the INEX initiative on XML retrieval. The following interview, which has been edited, offers a few of the highlights of our conversation.
