Those of us who love books couldn't help but notice the recent flurry of book-related developments. Amazon, the major online retailer of books and other products, has been busy pushing sales of ebooks and its Kindle ebook reader. It has also made a series of interesting acquisitions. In mid-August, Amazon announced it would acquire Canadian-based AbeBooks, which offers an online inventory of more than 110 million used, rare, and out-of-print books from about 13,000 independent booksellers worldwide. Neither company would supply details on plans to integrate collections or operations at the time of our NewsBreak. Just a few weeks later, Amazon announced it was buying the books-focused social network known as Shelfari, a startup site in which Amazon had previously invested.
