Several months ago, I received a call from a reporter at a national newspaper who was investigating the Google Knol reference product. The reporter was asking if it was taking unfair advantage of Google's market dominance to give products that it creates and owns preferential placement in search results and if that then damages the information products of other publishers. It wasn't the first time I had heard the argument. In fact, I addressed it in a January Infotoday.com NewsBreak titled, "Google Knol: The 'Grassy Knoll' for Publishers or Just Wikipedia?". Though the general press had a flurry of Google-baiting for a week, the topic died until mid-July when Google announced that it would now move from a restricted beta mode for Knol to an open policy. Once again, articles circulated in the national press that this represented a move to create future content domination to accompany its domination of the web-searching field by GGG (Great God Google).
