摘要

In 1998, Peter Lyman and Brewster Kahle pointed out in D-Lib Magazine that AltaVista could search the equivalent of a stack of paper 620 miles high. By 2003, an article in Information Management Journal reported that a typical company's Windows NT server contained the equivalent of a stack of documents 800 miles high. According to Horst Forster, director of the Directorate-General for Information Society and Media of the European Commission (EC), today's global collection of digital objects would create 200 stacks of paper that could reach to the sun, which translates to 1,021 terabytes of documents. Forster provided this memorable image at the Fifth International Conference on Preservation of Digital Objects (iPRES 2008) at The British Library (BL) Sept. 29-30 in London. The most important point he made was that digital content is now being produced at a rate that exceeds our capacity to retain it. Forster maintains that this important data, which represents humankind's collective memory, is in danger of being lost.
