What a long, strange journey it has been. When this issue goes to press, the 2008 presidential election will be just days away. Many articles have been written about the unprecedented and historic nature of this election: breaking race and gender barriers, nominating a candidate who would be the oldest elected president, and shouting "Change!" from both camps. As I've honestly been watching as few of the ads as possible (although my favorite was Paris Hilton's response to John McCain), I find that much of the rhetoric has been on "Change!" and "What's wrong with the other candidate's plans." Perhaps it's necessary to keep specifics out of the mass media, although some specifics do emerge in hot-button areas including taxes and immigration. But the candidates' perspectives on technology, intellectual property, privacy, and other issues of importance to the information community have not received much mass media attention.
