On Feb. 21, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), on behalf of its member record companies, sent a new wave of 401 prelit-igation settlement letters to 12 universities. On May 23, a jury in Alexandria, Va., rendered a guilty verdict in the federal prosecution of a Brooklyn man for conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement. And the RIAA is asking now-20-year-old Whitney Harper to pay $7,400 to settle a suit that covers her alleged piracy of 37 music tracks when she was a juvenile. The former cheerleader in Texas admitted to downloading pirated music in her early teens. The Harper case is one of about 30,000 file-sharing copyright infringement lawsuits filed and pending by the RIAA. Cara Duckworth, RIAA director of communications, issued a press release saying that since 2003, the organization has "seen an emerging legal marketplace that would have struggled to gain traction" if not for the RIAA's "efforts to clamp down on online music theft." She says the organization's efforts have slowed the growth of illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) services and educated the public about what it can and can't do when downloading music.
