Governments and companies became eligible to register Internet addresses in the new. asia domain in early October. Individuals will need to wait until February 2008 before they can apply. The sponsoring organization and registry operator for .asia is Dot-Asia Organisation, a nonprofit company based in Hong Kong. DotAsia was created solely with the mission to sponsor and promote the new generic top-level domain (gTLD); it's the second geographic regional domain to be introduced following the launch of .eu in 2006. DotAsia believes that a pan-Asia and Asia Pacific Internet community exists and needs representation. Otherwise, Asian businesses can only express a local identity using individual country code TLDs (ccTLDs), such as .cn or .jp.
