As I stood at the 12th-floor window of a London hotel recently, I balanced my laptop on the window ledge. I was trying to pick up the wireless signal of belkin57, the one unsecured wireless network in range.rnAlthough the transfer speeds were slow at times, and the signal came and went depending on the time of day and the prevailing weather conditions, that free Wi-Fi at least provided some connectivity, which is more than I can say for the hotel's LAN.rnStanding by the window, I recalled a night not long ago (but probably a lifetime in dog years), when I sat on the floor of a hotel in Central Europe with a fat phonebook open in front of me. I was scanning through all the introductory material in the book as I tried to find the landline number to dial for an international operator.rnEven when the Wi-Fi is lousy, I have to remember that this is not as bad as it used to be; nothing is. In fact, things in the techno space are pretty good overall, if they would just quit changing.
