摘要

I recently talked to a publisher who had followed a link to a blog called Caribou's Mom, a site that I had picked up in one of my many RSS feeds. He was taken by the concept of reading challenges and asked whether I thought there might be any potential for marketing titles from a university press (specifically scholarly book content) to a broader audience through such an approach. The information community is relatively familiar with reading challenges, which are frequently a part of literacy campaigns and fundraisers or leveraged to improve test scores. They make the news when a principal dyes his or her hair green after students achieve a goal or when the local public library hands out awards at the end of the summer. In the hands of a blogger, however, a reading challenge performs quite a different function.
