What really happens to an old cell phone when it is traded in for a newer model? Just ask the staff at ReCellular, Inc. ReCellular is the largest dealer of used cellular phones in the U.S., processing more than 250,000 used wireless handsets each month. The Michigan-based firm obtains many of its phones from companies including Cingular and Verizon, which let users trade in their old phones for new models. The service provider then sells the phones to ReCellular where they are either refurbished for resale or disassembled and used for spare parts. The majority of ReCellular's wares, however, come from cell phone donation programs run by charities. The March of Dimes runs an annual cell phone drive with ReCellular that generates an estimated $160,000 per year.
