If there is any topic certain to generate controversy and heated discussion in today's information industry, it is open access (OA) publishing. At numerous conferences and other industry meetings, OA has pitted users and publishers on opposite sides of the controversy, sometimes with significant acrimony. But the situation was different in Washington on Nov. 8, 2004. People attending the "Does Open Access Publishing Really Work in Practice?" seminar, sponsored by the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) and the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), not only seemed to recognize that OA is here to stay, but they also sought to understand the issues surrounding the topic. Speakers represented publishers who have experimented with several variations of OA, and most of the audience was keenly interested in the results of the experiments. The result was a highly interesting, daylong seminar.
