Internationalizing the Web? Now I know what you're thinking: Hey, they call it the World Wide Web, don't they? Doesn't "World Wide" already imply international? Well yes, but not exactly. True, the Web does travel worldwide. But to create an analogy, the Web is much like a tourist: Even though it may visit Cambodia, it remains very much a Westerner. To become truly international, the Web must evolve. And then so too must content authors and publishers evolve to embrace internationalization, says the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). More about that in a bit. The internationalization of Web content is achieved when that content is adaptable to the cultural and linguistic requirements of a global audience. This is not a minor task as it must take into account unique symbols, punctuation, alphabets, and the directionality of text. This posed a large problem under HTML, but the flexibility of XML and XHTML offers more pliant solutions.
