Streaming video has always had to battle its way upstream to make any significant inroads into Web space. Like all streaming media, it's had two things flowing against it. First, there were the computers themselves, many of which were ill-equipped to handle any type of video playback with elan. And then there was the bandwidth itself. Streaming video wanted gushing rivers but found itself strangled as it was poured into the Internet equivalent of straws. So only the most dedicated devotees would scamper to The Lord of the Rings Web site to watch the streaming-video movie trailer. (These were probably the same people who waited for hours to see the movie when it opened in theaters 5 minutes after midnight.) And would you really expect someone to respond to, "Hey, stop looking at the television. Come over to the computer and watch this low-reso-lution, jerky video clip that's out of sync with the sound"? Yes, streaming video has had its struggles.
