摘要

Humans and mango trees share a common ancestor! This is one of the conclusions we have to draw from the Tree-of-Life hypothesis which was first proposed by Charles Darwin 1 50 years ago. The evidence for a common ancestry for all of life has been steadily accumulating since and today, the research focus has shifted towards reconstructing the relationships among the 1.8 million species that have been described by scientists. This reconstruction is benefiting from the availability of genomic data and major theoretical and computational advances. The task is nevertheless daunting. It involves many laboratories from across the globe. Tree of Life research has recently been boosted by a USD80 million initiative of the United States National Science Foundation (NSF; "Assembling the Tree of Life"). Several laboratories at the National University of Singapore (NUS) are contributing to this international effort.
