摘要

The megafauna - very large animals, like elephants and rhinoceroses - have suffered a devastating worldwide decline that started in the Late Pleistocene (125,000 years ago), peaked at the beginning of the Holocene (13,000 years ago), and worsened again in modern times. Most of the megafauna species that survived the earlier extinction episodes are now under threat and have been extirpated from a large proportion of their historical ranges (Figures 1 ft 2). The reasons for this decline are diverse but one stands over anything else - hunting by people. Sadly, much of this hunting today is a response to the huge and reinvigorated demand from traditional medicine and bush-meat markets or is retaliation for human-wildlife conflicts such as crop and livestock raidinn.
