Recent innovations in laser mass spectrometry have permitted the accurate and precise U-Pb age dating of zircon in granite rocks from Singapore. The results can be used to make a new hypothesis for the plate tectonic evolution of Singapore and the Malay Peninsula.During the past 5 years, innovations in combining laser and mass spectrometer technology have promoted the accurate, precise and relatively inexpensive age dating of granite rocks. This article will show how this technique has been applied to Singapore and how the results can be used to make a hypothesis on the plate tectonic evolution of the region.
