The demand for paper in India is growing and expected to rise to 27 million tonnes by the year 2028 from the present consumption of 18 Million tonnes (year 2018), which shows there is a growth demand of 50 percent in the next eight years from the existing demand. This growth is despite the pushes for digitalization in all areas. This projected growth is due to a sustained increase in the number of school-going children in rural areas, increased health consciousness of young generation in urban life style, flourishing e-commerce and hygienic packaging preferences. This growth will mainly reflect in various grades of writing and printing paper, industrial papers, Tissues etc. The demand for packaging grades of paper is greater than the cultural varieties on account of consumer preference and e-commerce. Increasing preference for eco-friendly products, mainly among the growing young generation, compelling the modern retailers to depend more paper products to meet their increasing eco-friendly packaging requirement instead of plastic and related materials causing more harm to environment. Besides, government is also spending more on education which is also pushing up the demand for paper. At present per capita consumption of paper in India is around 14.5 kg which is quite low compared to the global consumption index. This is an indication to the manufacturers and investors that in India there is a lot of opportunities in pulp and paper sector for future growth.
