Ahead of sending Congress a report detailing the costs of recapitalizing the surge sealift fleet, a Navy official told lawmakers this week the service will consider accelerating procurement of used vessels in lieu of extending ships' service lives. The comments came from Navy acquisition executive Hondo Geurts while discussing sealift fleet recapitalization efforts during a Senate Armed Services seapower subcommittee hearing this week. The recapitalization plan includes procuring used vessels, extending the service lives of selected ships and new construction. To prepare to execute that plan, the Maritime Administration issued a request for information in February for used sealift vessels to purchase in fiscal years 2021 and 2022. There is potential to "purchase some [ships] rapidly off the commercial market [and] accelerate that portion to get rid of our oldest ships," Geurts told lawmakers. "It's becoming less and less cost effective to extend them."
