The Navy has begun a prototyping effort to demonstrate a new autonomous integration capability that, if successful, will debuted in the fiscal year 2022 budget request, according to an officer overseeing the project. The project is called the Rapid Autonomy Integration Lab and is being spearheaded by Capt. Pete Small, program manager for the unmanned maritime systems office. Small told attendees today at a virtual conference that RAIL aims to integrate, test and certify unique software and mission capabilities prior to deploying them onboard unmanned vehicles in the fleet. "All of those sensors and technologies and payloads come together at the autonomy level on the vehicle. So, in order to do those upgrades, we're going to have to integrate the software that comes with the payloads and software that comes [as] boutique autonomy mission capability with the existing nuts and bolts autonomy software," he said.
