Senate appropriators have proposed a multimillion-dollar cut to the Pentagon's directed-energy research funding, setting up a conference issue that will have to be settled later this year. In its version of the fiscal year 2012 appropriations bill passed last month, the Senate Appropriations Committee cut the Pentagon's $96.3 million request by $60 million, citing "authorization adjustment" in its report language. Earlier this year, House appropriators proposed fully funding the program. House and Senate authorizers will also have to meet in conference on this issue. The House's defense authorization bill, passed by the full chamber in May, recommends increasing the program's request by $50 million to $146.3 million. But Senate authorizers elected to only provide $36.3 million for the program.
