McGuire, who got his start at Bill Ackman's activist hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management before launching his own firm in 2010, is one of the most aggressive shareholder activists to explode onto the scene during the post-financial-crisis bull market. In little more than seven years, he has taken activist stakes in 22 companies. Last year he waged proxy battles - heated contests over board seats that can change a company's future - with two of them.
