CPFL Energia is a giant, the largest private sector electricity company in Latin America's largest economy. Based in Brazil's most developed state, Sao Paulo, CPFL is responsible for 13 percent of power distribution and 16 percent of sales to "free" consumers —those who buy electricity on the open market— throughout the country. Strong revenue means rich payouts for CPFL's shareholders: R$1.4 billion ($824 million) in dividends over the last 12 months, a yield of 8.6 percent. This value creation is the result of CPFL's strategy of long-term, consistent growth. Since its IPO in September 2004, CPFL has paid R$7.1 billion ($4.2 billion) in dividends to its shareholders.
