POOR DAVOS MAN:FOR AT LEAST sixyears, observers have been tryingto kill him (a Bloomberg headline proclaimed "The Death of Davos Man — The Death of Davos" in 2010, to name one example). ¶ Yet in mid-January, Davos Men will once again convene at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, to pontificate on global affairs. ¶ On their lips, officially, will be "Responsive and Responsible Leadership" and the "Fourth Industrial Revolution"—the latter a brainchild of WEF founder and ur-Davos Man Klaus Schwab, ¶ The tension between the two topics is obvious. The first seems likely to catalyze discussions of populist/ nationalist revolt at the ballot box and will be punctuated on the final day of the event, when President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office, an event unlikely to be applauded by Davos Men. The second topic, however, speaks to the inevitability of increased, not decreased, global connections —the very ethos of the event's history and attendees. ¶ Institutional Investor's audience, the stewards of global capital, takes the long view, and the long view lies with the increasing connectivity of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is thus appropriate that for our special section on the World Economic Forum, we take an in-depth look at the immense technological advances of our time—and, true to our roots, what those advances mean for the shepherds of the world's capital.
