Corporate governance in Japan, long a concept to which many companies have paid little more than lip service, is poised to undergo a radical transformation. The third phase of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's multipronged approach to firing up the country's long-stagnant economy emphasizes greater accountability by executives and heightened transparency of financial operations, all with an eye toward enticing greater foreign investment. "Japan's Corporate Governance Code: Seeking Sustainable Corporate Growth and Increased Corporate Value Over the Mid- to Long Term," which establishes new standards for Japanese companies, will be implemented later this year. A draft was issued in December for public comment, and the final version will be applicable to all companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
