I love autumn for its cool, crisp air and bright fall foliage, but the early-morning dog walks take some getting used to. Jack Frost is a frequentvisitorto the New York area these days, andit'sdark as night as my border collie and I make our way to the park. Yet late October brought a rare delight for early risers: the conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and Mars, shining brightly above the eastern horizon about an hour before sunrise. Such planetary trios are fleeting events, and this one took place as Venus was at its farthest distance fromthesunand hence its most luminous.
