摘要

1Two-waystreet Many a news site has run personal essays about leaving the big city.As Tassos Stassopoulos of AllianceBernstein writes, that well-hewed literary path might obscure much of China's economic story: "Internal migration trends that are often hidden from government statistics may partly explain this." He takes thecaseof Lin, a24-year-old from Sichuan province who followed his parents to Shanghai in search of better opportunities. Yet he didn't click with his peers in his new city, and - in a scenario all too familiar to Londoners and New Yorkers-the only affordable places to live were on the urban outskirts, necessitating a long commute. Lin returned to his hometown: Even though he took a 25 percent pay cut, cheaper rent means he has more disposable income and can live within walking distance of work. Since he never changed his household registration, however, 'Lin's fall in income will appear as a slowdown in GDP growth, because his wages dropped when he left Shanghai," writes Stassopoulos. "His rise in discretionary income - and better quality of life -won't be visible at all to data analysts."
