摘要

Human beings have struggled for decades to beat the market. Could rats do a better job? Three years ago Michael Marcovicl, an Austrian artist, embarked on an experiment to explore how successfully rats could trade the forex markets. Using sonification technology, he set up tickers that would play a piano note for each price movement in a given asset. Eighty rats were trained to press a green "long" button or a red "short" button in response to each sound; if they anticipated the next price movement correctly, they got a treat. After three months the pool was narrowed to four rats - Mr. Lehman, Ms. Kleinwort, Ms. Coutts and Mr. Morgan-who predicted with more than 50 percent aggregate accuracy. Marcovici, 45, originally viewed the experiment as a pure art project. "It was a hoax," he says. But when the results of Rattraders appeared In September in "Art and Economy," a pamphlet published by Berlin's Instrtut fuer Kunst im Kontext, Marcovici started getting calls from investors, including several hedge funds in New York, inquiring about his rats' trading availability. 'These guys are willing to try anything, even the most ridiculous idea," he says of the funds.
