Talk about risk appetite. Prudential Investment Management, under the leadership of CEO David Hunt, has struck a deal with General Motors that could provide a template for companies looking to off-load their pension liabilities. Pru's group insurance unit is taking on the fiduciary responsibility of paying GM's pension beneficiaries with a group annuity worth $29 billion. Pru gets the assets in the plan as well as some $3.5 billion in cash, while GM cuts its obligations for its salaried employees. Pru takes on all the risks of paying the plan's liabilities, including the risk that beneficiaries will live into their 100s.
