Much smaller - but still significant - investments are being made in other alternative energy sources. Studies show that Brazil has 143 gigawatts of wind energy potential, most of it located in the northeastern states of Ceara and Rio Grande do Norte. The best wind locations, however, are on the coast - up to 60 miles from connection points to the national grid system.rnCompanies such as Portugal's EDP are paying more immediate attention to smaller but better-located wind projects in industrial states further south. EDP is considering wind projects in Brazil with a total generating capacity of 800 MW.rnEDP, Spain's Iberdrola, Petrobras, state holding company Eletrobras and iron ore producer Vale are expected to bernamong bidders for new wind power licenses that are to be auctioned in late November. Major utilities such as Cemig and CPFL also are likely to bid.
