The resignation of Samsung's longtime leader following his April indictment on tax charges could signal a new era for South Korea's best-known global brand. In announcing the resignation of Lee Kun Hee, the group also disclosed that it would abolish its strategic planning office, which Lee had used to control Samsung's 59 operating companies. The change suggests a welcome decentralization of the sprawling conglomerate, regulators believe. "We expect Samsung will come up with more-improved corporate governance [and] improved transparency in management structure," says Jun Kwang Woo, chairman of the Financial Supervisory Commission, South Korea's market watchdog. Lee, 66, was indicted in April on charges of evading $112 million in taxes and for breach of trust in the sale of convertible bonds in Samsung Everland at less than market value in a bid to maintain family control over the group.
