In 2008, TT marks its 100th year of commercial oil production. Today, some 500 companies provide services to the upstream and downstream energy sectors. With 25 major petrochemicals and metals industrial plants and a refinery, TT is positioning to be the hemisphere's leading petrochemical and metals processing hub, ex- panding its base of raw material by importing natural gas from Venezuela via pipeline, only 6 miles away at the closest point. In 2007, the National Energy Company (NEC) handled over 21 million metric tons of petrochemical and steel products valued at US$6 billion. According to a 2007 US State Department report, "The country also possesses substantial heavy oil reserves which to date remain largely unexploited. It is estimated that there are 100 million barrels of oil in place remaining to be produced in the onshore areas, and 2,600 to 5,000 million barrels in the offshore areas."
