Markets may be reeling in the wake of the latest round of financial failures and bailouts, but opportunity abounds. No one should know that betterthan the purveyors of technology to financial services companies. When Institutional Investor inaugurated its annual list of leaders in e-finance back in 2000, the bubble in tech stocks was just beginning to deflate. Valuations took a pounding, but technology has gone on to play an ever-increasing role at banks and brokerages and in financial markets. Exchange operators, led by top-ranked Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE Euronext, dominate this year's Online 30 (see "Optimism Reigns," at right). Six of the top ten executives operate stock, futures or commodity exchanges.
