摘要

Painted on village walls and posted in Internet chat rooms around China is a popular slogan that translates literally as, "If you want to become rich, first fix the road." And indeed, the country's emphasis on building up its transportation infrastructure is producing great benefits. China invests more in infrastructure, as a share of GDP, than any of its East Asian neighbors, and the result has paved the way for the country's tremendous economic growth of recent years.rnThe investment momentum is unlikely to slow. According to its 11th five-year plan, which covers 2006 to 2010, China will add 17,000 km in railroad lines, build 14 expressways, and upgrade many of its airports and seaports. In all, the government plans to invest 3.8 trillion yuan (US$500 billion) in transportation infrastructure, up 73 percent from the previous five-year period, according to a report by investment bank Merrill Lynch.
