History looms large at the Adlon. Even today, nearly 20 years after the Berlin Wall came down, Mikhail Gorbachev still gets a standing ovation whenever he strolls into the hotel's plush lobby. More than a Berlin landmark, the Adlon is a constant reminder of Germany's painful past and the enormous promise of its rebirth after the fall of the Wall, which used to stand just a stone's throw from the lobby.
