When the signboards changed at 124 bank branches on January 1, revealing the new name Taipei Fubon Bank, it marked completion of one of the most significant steps in the ongoing consolidation of Taiwan's banks. The combination of Fubon Commercial Bank, a unit of the Fubon Financial Holding Co., and TaipeiBank, formerly owned by the Taipei city government, represents the first union in Taiwan between a privately owned bank and a government-held financial institution. The merger should raise the profile of Fubon, an expanding financial company that is eyeing new markets, with its performance-focused management policies.
