Over the last decade, China's insurance market grew from almost nothing to the third largest in the Asia-Pacific region, after Japan and South Korea. Life insurance expanded by more than 30 percent annually and non-life grew by 12 percent a year. Even so, the industry faces wrenching change amid new competition and market reforms mandated by the World Trade Organization.
