摘要

Little more than six months after he was re-elected with the biggest majority in Thai parliamentary history, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his Thai Rak Thai Party are grappling with a succession of problems that have not only cast a shadow over the country's until recently stellar economic prospects, but also threaten to undermine his once unassailable hold on power. Despite an impressive list of achievements garnered during its first term in office, including a sharp revival of the economy and a return of investor confidence, the latest challenges facing the government are considerable. Soaring oil prices on the international markets have hit the country's current account with a deficit reaching $6.1 billion in the first six months of the year, compared with a surplus of $7.1 billion for the whole of 2004. Now the fear is that high energy prices will dampen consumer sentiment, raising the prospects of slower economic growth as well as higher inflation.
