On 17 april 2003, telekom malaysia passed a new milestone when it purchased the cellular operations of Celcom Bhd. The merger propelled Celcom into the forefront of the mobile communications industry both in terms of network coverage, capacity and customer base. The integration exercise with Telekom's own mobile operations is already well under way and is slated for completion by the end of 2004. The overriding aim is to create a single integrated operation for customers, thereby increasing efficiency, enhancing shareholdervalue and consolidating the new brand position. For financial year 2003, Telekom Malaysia reported a strong financial performance. Group revenue increased by 20 percent, driven largely by growth in the cellular market as well as an increase in data and non-telecommunication services. Group profit before taxation for the year rose by 18.3 percent.
