摘要

Haydar al-Uzri smiles genially as he tosses his shiny black German MP5K submachine gun onto the beige couch of his office, which overlooks the garden of his villa in Baghdad's well-to-do al-Mansour neighborhood. Behind high walls in the driveway below, his driver and two bodyguards, all wielding AK-47 Kalashnikovs, wait in an armored Toyota SUV. Polite but clearly in a hurry, the tall, black-haired Iraqi ensconces himself behind his desk for a quick chat. He has just a few minutes to spare before he must race off for a rendezvous across town. Al-Uzri is not a militiaman or a rebel leader. A member of a prominent Shiite family, the 55-year-old returned to Iraq for the first time in 44 years in June 2003, two months after the ouster of Saddam Hussein. He now serves as a senior adviser on banking to the interim Iraqi government: His pressing appointment across town — a nerve-racking 30-minute trip — is with Finance Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi.
