Thailand's economy may be suffering from the recent effects of high oil prices and a pick-up in inflation, but economists are confident that it will still achieve the govern-6-7 percent GOP growth set at the beginning ment's target of 6-7 percent GOP growth set at the beginning of the year. Better still, a strong performance by the country's export sector - which grew 22 percent in the first seveii months of the year - and a pickup in domestic investment are likely to underpin another strong performance. The continued revival of the economy comes in the wake of a stream of government measures that aim to boost domestic consumption and expand production. Populist measures such as state handouts to small-scale businesses and village cooperatives have proved highly controversial. But they also have helped to boost spending, especially in the less developed regions of the country.
