Shining with Growth While Coping with Deficits Hungary's government is raising hackles with tax schemes to close the budget deficit, but the economy is marching ahead on the strength of solid performance by local blue chips and the entry of new foreign investment. Hungary, just some five months after EU accession, in economic terms, has wrapped itself in economic contradictions. On the one hand, it is a Central European high-flyer, where the stock exchange is running at its highest historical level. The BUX index is currently over 13,000 points, up over 40 percent in local currency terms this year. GDP is growing at a steady 4 percent per year and inflation is coming down smoothly, having peaked at 7.6 percent May of 2004.
