Like many other aspects of the regulation of chemicals in the environment, the derivation and use of standards to protect humans and the environment has recently been the subject of much research and thought in Europe. This volume is the product of a SETAC Technical Workshop held in the United Kingdom in 2006. It was prompted by European Union regulatory concerns, but there were a few non-European participants and the issues addressed have general applicability.
