The United States shifted to a first inventor-to-file patent system effective March 16, 2013, as part of the patent reforms enacted through the America Invents Act (AIA). Previously, the United States had been a first-to-invent patent system. In conjunction with this shift to a first-to-file system, the new AIA rules also have changed/updated the classes of prior art that may be used to evaluate patent applications.
