As the menace of engagement in a new world war loomed higher and darker. President Franklin D. Roosevelt turned to World War I Medal of Honor recipient Colonel William 'Wild Bill' Donovan to add another arrow - the Office of Strategic Services - to the Nation's quiver. Intelligence in war was not new to the United States; it had played roles of varying degrees of importance from the Revolutionary War onward. But, OSS would be a different, more exotic weapon, extending US clandestine collection, sabotage, resistance and strike operations across all theaters.The OSS players were uniquely American 'citizen soldiers', rich and poor, from many different walks of life, some better educated than others, entering the intelligence ranks to contribute to best professional advantage. Their common traits, in the main, were initiative and commitment to reaching whatever the goal at hand.
