Growing up in a post-war environment in the busy port of Holyhead made this reviewer's decision to choose a career at sea a natural one. After joining my first ship in 1961, and for many years afterwards, I sailed with a number of seamen who had served on the Atlantic Convoys during the dark days of the Second World War. One particular incident, although slightly distasteful, has stayed with me ever since my first trip to sea. Barely over the Mersey Bar in Liverpool Bay, I needed to use the toilet but, upon entering the communal bathroom and passing the line of cubicles, I was aghast to notice one old weather-beaten seaman sitting there with the latrine door wide open. I thought that this was rather disgusting and, upon my return to the comforts of the mess room, I expressed this opinion to an older crewmember. He gave me the following explanation. 'Taff, he said, 'old Billy was torpedoed five times during the last war and witnessed, on more than one occasion, his shipmates been unable to open doors due to damaged door frames following explosions caused by torpedoes'. Billy, as I recall, never closed his cabin door at sea, but left it ajar on a hook. On warm evenings in the tropics, and often following a heavy rain shower, the younger crew members would frequently gather outside on deck and listen to some Atlantic convoy veterans recalling their exciting, if poignant, reminiscences of their time aboard ships that wartime black humour had dubbed 'floating coffins'. On reflection, these individuals probably had a deep-seated need to talk about their experiences whilst others were reluctant to do so, with old Billy falling into the latter category. For this reviewer, these stories, far too numerous to give detailed attention to here, brought home the hardships of the seamen of the British Merchant Navy during the years 1939-45.
