摘要

When historians first gained access to the papers of the international labor expert Jay Lovestone in the mid-1990s, they came across some rather unusual documents. One, for example, filed among the 895 boxes of Lovestone manuscripts held by the Hoover Institution at Stanford University (another huge collection resided at the George Meany Memorial Archives outside Washington, DC), purported to be a record of a meeting held in November 1950. Unlike conventional minutes, it identified those in attendance not by their names but rather by their professions: Mr Plumber, Photographer, Soldier, Intellectual, and so on. As described in this document, the meeting began with a review of previous activities jointly undertaken by the nameless individuals.
