After four years of wobbling orders and declining deliveries, 2005 was a banner year for the regional aircraft manufacturers. The tide finally turned, at least on the order front, with a total of 427 aircraft sold, compared with 293 the year before - an increase of 46%. In addition, even though the number of deliveries continued to decline slightly, from 308 to 276, the global backlog grew to 740 aircraft. However, this generally encouraging trend masks very different situations at the two major jet suppliers, Embraer and Bombardier. In fact the greatest beneficiaries are the turboprop builders, Bombardier again, and ATR, who had a record year, with 151 orders - well over three times as much as the previous year's 44. Elevated fuel prices were enough to breathe new life into a market that seemed to have been marginalised for almost a decade.
